Skellefteå's building and environment committee granted a building permit on 24 September 2026 for a new data-centre building, DC02, and for converting DS4 and FA03 into DC01 on Ackumulatorn 3, on the former Northvolt site at Bergsbyn. SVT reports the applicant is EdgeConneX. A start notice is still required before construction.
The permit covers the two buildings of phase one, planned to be complete in 2028 according to SVT. A second phase of five buildings is planned for early 2031; no building permit had been sought for it when SVT reported on 1 October 2026.
Before a start notice, the company must hold a technical consultation with the municipality. Consultation with the County Administrative Board is reported to run from autumn 2026 to early 2027. Grid capacity for the site is not disclosed by Skellefteå Kraft.
