Transformer lead times — reading a Swedish power clock
Is the transformer on the critical path for your Swedish hall, or have you only been handed a global survey slide? The IEA’s October 2023 Electricity Grids and Secure Energy Transitions report gives one dated example: power transformers of 50 MVA size had typical procurement times of 11 months before the pandemic, and purchasers could then face a wait of over 18 months. The IEA’s 25 February 2025 Building the Future Transmission Grid report, based on a 2024 industry survey, says it now takes two to three years to procure cables and up to four years to secure large power transformers, that average lead times for cables and large power transformers have almost doubled since 2021, and that the survey suggests the price of power transformers rose by around 75 percent. Those are IEA survey sentences about transmission-class equipment. They are not a Falun delivery week, not a Horndal factory slot, and not a substitute for the local or regional network owner’s dated letter. Svenska kraftnät’s connection pages and its Network Development Plan 2026–2035 describe a Swedish transmission process and a plan period. They do not publish a national data-center transformer calendar. The Commission’s 28 November 2023 Grid Action Plan asks ENTSO-E and the EU DSO Entity to give manufacturers more visibility of upcoming procurement. Visibility is not a reserved pad for your plot.

Reading order
Name the object before you name a month. A customer-owned hall transformer, a network-owner distribution transformer, a regional-network unit and a transmission-class large power transformer are different machines. The IEA’s 50 MVA example and its later “large power transformer” survey sentence sit in the last of those families. They do not automatically describe the pad outside a retail colo hall in Kista.
Then name who is buying. The network owner may procure the unit that sits on its side of the point of connection. The hall developer may procure a customer transformer. Those two purchase orders do not share a queue just because a slide says “grid equipment.” Svenska kraftnät’s connection pages describe a formal transmission conversation. Most halls still have a regional or local counterpart. Ask which letterhead will actually place the order.
Then label the clock. A manufacturer’s factory slot is not a network study. A network study is not a reservation. A reservation is not an energized load. The time-to-power page draws those bars. This page asks which bar the transformer sentence actually unlocks. An IEA global average is not a Swedish bar.

What the sourced clocks actually measure
The 2023 IEA grids report is useful because it refuses a single world week. It names one size class — 50 MVA — and two dated states: about 11 months before the pandemic, then over 18 months as manufacturers struggled with labour and material shortages. That is one example inside a wider grids-supply chapter. It is not a Swedish statutory table and it is not a 2026 factory confirmation for a named Swedish hall.
The 2025 IEA transmission report updates the picture with a 2024 survey of leading industry players. It puts cable procurement at two to three years and large power transformers at up to four years. It says average lead times for those two families have almost doubled since 2021. It also says prices for individual orders depend on complexity and capacity, that the survey suggests transformer prices rose by around 75 percent, and that waiting times for direct-current cables extend beyond five years. A later paragraph in the same report says permitting remains the primary cause of delays in transmission projects in advanced economies, and that an extra-high-voltage line typically takes an average of eight years to develop in Europe and the United States. Those are IEA sentences. They do not convert a Swedish detaljplan into a transformer, and they do not convert a transformer into a detaljplan.
The Commission’s Grid Action Plan of 28 November 2023 treats supply-chain visibility as a European coordination problem. Action 13 asks ENTSO-E and the EU DSO Entity, together with grid operators, to establish mechanisms by the fourth quarter of 2024 that give manufacturers more visibility of upcoming procurement plans for equipment and systems on all voltage levels. That is a planning-visibility action. It is not a Swedish reservation and it is not a published week count for a hall in Staffanstorp or Sollefteå.
Svenska kraftnät’s connection pages remain the formal Swedish transmission door. The Network Development Plan 2026–2035 is a dated Swedish plan document. Neither source, in the files used here, publishes a national data-center transformer lead time. A hydropower-rich mix and a colour on the indicative capacity map still do not place an order.
What named primary sources show
The two IEA reports are the dated quantitative sources on this page. Keep their units attached: 50 MVA and “over 18 months” in 2023; “up to four years” for large power transformers and “almost doubled since 2021” in the 2025 survey. Do not average those two reports into a third invented Swedish number. Do not move the 75 percent price sentence onto a municipal welcome letter.
Svenska kraftnät’s connection portal and the 2026–2035 network development plan show that Sweden publishes a transmission process and a plan. They do not, in the cited files, name a transformer factory slot for Meta’s Luleå campus, Microsoft’s Gävle–Sandviken–Staffanstorp region, Google’s Horndal groundbreaking, EcoDataCenter Falun, atNorth SWE04 or a new plot in Arlandastad. Operator megawatt sentences stay in their own cells.
The Commission energy-performance and Grid Action Plan pages are reporting and coordination context. They do not fill a missing Swedish hall transformer week. If a network-owner letter is silent about who procures which unit, the cell stays empty.
A matrix instead of a delivery slogan
Draw one page with equipment rows and evidence columns. Customer transformer, network-owner unit and transmission-class large power transformer are different rows. Inquiry, reservation, purchase order, factory slot and energized load are different columns. Empty cells stay empty. An IEA survey month is a footnote, not a column.
Do not invent a Swedish transformer league table from the IEA’s 50 MVA example, the 2025 four-year sentence, or the Commission’s visibility action. Those remain different objects from different years and methods.

Common misreads
The first misread is to paste the IEA’s “up to four years” onto every Swedish hall. The survey is about large power transformers in a transmission-supply chapter. A customer pad at a colo site may be a different machine. The second is to treat the 2023 50 MVA example and the 2025 survey as one number. They are two dated sentences. The third is to treat a Commission visibility action as a reserved Swedish slot.
The fourth is to collapse the network-owner purchase and the hall purchase into one queue. The fifth is to treat a groundbreaking slogan as proof that the transformer is already ordered. The sixth is to use a national generation mix as proof that the local unit exists.
What to ask next
Ask which transformer, at which voltage, sits on which side of the point of connection. Ask who places the order and whether a factory slot is reserved, quoted or only hoped. Ask which network-owner paper you already hold — inquiry, reservation or agreement — and which bar the unit actually unlocks.
Then open the time-to-power page, the grid-connection page and the grid-queue page. If the operator or the network owner will not name the machine class and the order state, record the gap. Do not fill it from an IEA slide.

What this does and does not prove
This page proves that transformer time is a sourced supply-chain object, not a Swedish slogan. It proves that the IEA published a 50 MVA example in 2023 and a 2024-survey update in February 2025, and that the Commission asked for procurement visibility in November 2023.
It does not prove a best Swedish transformer vendor. It does not publish a national hall week, a Falun factory slot or a Horndal price. It does not treat Svenska kraftnät’s plan as a reserved unit. It does not convert a municipal welcome into an order.
Unknown machine class, unknown buyer and unknown order state stay unknown. Point to the named source gap. Until a later primary source adds a dated Swedish hall transformer with a class and a week, the IEA sentence stays global.
