Early indication versus reservation — a same-day expiry is not a queue place
Does a Swedish hall already “have power” because someone holds a free 300 MW indication letter, or because a förhandsbesked has been sent? Svenska kraftnät’s indication page, reviewed on 12 March 2026, describes a free, voluntary request for an early view of transmission-network capacity. It is open for needs up to 300 MW at least three years ahead. The indication expires on the day the reply is sent, because new applications or other system-affecting circumstances can change the connection point after that moment. A request is normally answered within three months and, if capacity is available, includes a standardised cost for enabling the increase. The service is not a substitute for an application and is not available to offshore-wind actors. Svenska kraftnät’s allocated-reserved-requested table, used here from the 2 September 2026 letterhead covering figures through August 2026, prints 3 009 MW of reserved production and 780 MW of reserved consumption. Reservation, on that page, means a förhandsbesked has been sent. Allocation means a signed agreement. Those national totals are not split by data centre. The requested-capacity-by-area table from the same 2 September 2026 letterhead prints data-centre consumption cells of 495 MW in SE1, 1 320 MW in SE2, 5 169 MW in SE3 and a blank cell in SE4. Those cells run until reservation. A blank SE4 cell is not southern surplus. The grid-connection page already owns the working brief. This page only asks which published queue object a “power secured” slogan is actually sitting on.

General orientation. Assess the specific project separately. Applies to: Readers testing an indication, reservation or requested-queue sentence on a Swedish hall connection file.
Reading order
Seat the paper class before you compare slogans. An early indication is a free, voluntary, perishable view. A requested cell is an application still in the queue. A reserved cell is a förhandsbesked sent. An allocated cell is a signed agreement. Energised load is a later operating fact. Write the class and the date on one line before you say the hall has power.
Then read the indication page as a same-day expiry. Needs up to 300 MW and at least three years ahead. Normally answered within three months. If capacity is available, a standardised cost is included. The reply expires the day it is sent. Larger needs go through a formal application. Offshore wind is excluded. None of those rules names a data centre in this register.
Then read the August 2026 reserved totals as national, unnamed totals. 3 009 MW reserved production and 780 MW reserved consumption through August, published on the 2 September 2026 letterhead. Reservation means förhandsbesked sent. Allocation means signed agreement. The table does not say how much of the 780 MW is data-centre demand and does not name counterparties.
Then read the area table as applications until reservation. 495 MW, 1 320 MW, 5 169 MW and a blank SE4 cell are data-centre consumption applications. They are not reserved plot megawatts. They are not an expired indication letter. They are not a signed agreement for Meta Luleå, Microsoft Gävle or atNorth SWE04.
- Paper class before a power-secured slogan.
- An indication expires the day it is sent.
- 780 MW reserved consumption is not a data-centre split.
- Requested area cells run until reservation.
What an indication clock and a reservation clock actually measure
The 12 March 2026 indication page measures a perishable view, not a queue place. Svenska kraftnät can indicate whether capacity exists at transmission-network connection points. An early indication may be given to existing regional distribution systems, or to an actor referred from such a system. The service is voluntary and separate from the formal connection process. Treating a three-month letter as reserved SE3 power rewrites the page.
The 300 MW sentence is a ceiling, not an offer. Needs above that band, or needs closer than three years, go through a connection application. Offshore-wind actors cannot use the service. A standardised cost in a positive reply is a standardised cost. It is not a signed connection agreement and not a municipal welcome.
The reserved-consumption cell of 780 MW through August 2026 measures förhandsbesked sent at national scale. The reserved-production cell of 3 009 MW is a different row. Allocation is a later signed-agreement row. Adding reserved production to reserved consumption invents a third figure the table does not publish as a hall total. Neither cell is split by data centre.
The 2 September 2026 area table measures applications until reservation. The data-centre consumption row is one type among others. SE1 495 MW, SE2 1 320 MW, SE3 5 169 MW and a blank SE4 cell stay application cells. A heavier SE3 cell is not reserved Stockholm power. A blank SE4 cell is not Staffanstorp surplus. Microsoft’s Sweden region spans SE2 and SE4 on papers already used here; that span is geography, not a transfer of queue megawatts.
Named halls stay on their own files. Meta Luleå, Microsoft Gävle and Sandviken, atNorth SWE04 and EcoDataCenter Falun illustrate paper types already in this register. They do not inherit an expired indication, a 780 MW reserved-consumption total or a requested area cell. The grid-queue page and the developer-etiquette page already own map-reading and inbox manners. This page does not steal them.
What named primary sources show
Svenska kraftnät’s 12 March 2026 indication page remains the dated process source for the free request, the 300 MW ceiling, the three-year horizon and the same-day expiry. Keep those rules attached to that letterhead.
The 2 September 2026 reserved-and-requested table remains the dated source for 3 009 MW reserved production and 780 MW reserved consumption through August. The same day’s area table remains the dated source for the data-centre application cells. The connection-process page remains the formal-application neighbour.
No cited source here publishes an issued indication for a named hall, a data-centre split of the 780 MW reserved-consumption cell, or a reserved megawatt taken from the area table.
A matrix instead of a power-secured slogan
Draw one page with paper-class rows and evidence columns. Indication, requested application, reserved förhandsbesked, allocated agreement and energised load are different columns. Empty cells stay empty. A 300 MW ceiling is an indication footnote, not a reserved-power column.
Do not invent a hall offer from an expired letter or from a national reserved-consumption total. Those remain different objects from different methods.
| Object | What a source can show | What this page will not invent |
|---|---|---|
| Early indication | SVK 12 Mar 2026: free; ≤300 MW; ≥3 years; expires same day | A queue place or reserved hall MW |
| Reserved consumption | SVK 2 Sep 2026: 780 MW through Aug 2026; förhandsbesked sent | A data-centre split or a named counterparty |
| Reserved production | Same table: 3 009 MW through Aug 2026 | A hall total or an energised load |
| DC application cells | SVK 2 Sep 2026: 495 / 1 320 / 5 169 MW; SE4 blank | Reserved plot MW or southern surplus |
| Formal application | SVK connection pages: larger or nearer needs | An inherited indication letter |
Common misreads
The first misread is to treat a same-day-expiry indication as reserved power or as a queue place. The page says the opposite. The second is to treat 300 MW as an offered hall envelope. The third is to treat 780 MW reserved consumption as data-centre halls.
The fourth is to treat 5 169 MW of SE3 applications as reserved Stockholm power. The fifth is to treat a blank SE4 cell as southern surplus. The sixth is to add reserved production to reserved consumption and call the sum a Swedish hall fleet. The seventh is to collapse this page into the SE1-versus-SE2 or SE3-versus-SE4 siting pages.
What to ask next
Ask which paper class anyone is quoting — indication, requested application, reserved förhandsbesked or signed agreement — and which dated letterhead you actually hold. Ask whether a 300 MW ceiling has been treated as an offer. Ask which network-owner letter sits beside the TSO paper.
Then open the grid-connection page, the grid-queue page and the electricity-areas page. If the operator will not name the paper class and the expiry, record the gap. Do not fill it from a power-secured slide.
- Is the live paper an indication, a request, a reservation or an agreement?
- Has a same-day expiry been ignored?
- Has 300 MW been treated as a hall envelope?
- Has 780 MW been treated as data-centre halls?
- Has a requested area cell been treated as reserved plot MW?
- Has a named hall inherited a national total?
What this does and does not prove
This page proves that Svenska kraftnät already publishes a perishable early indication with a 300 MW ceiling, already prints 780 MW of reserved consumption through August 2026 as förhandsbesked sent, and already prints data-centre application cells that run until reservation — and that those objects are not a hall offer.
It does not prove that a named Swedish hall can connect next year. It does not invent a data-centre split of 780 MW. It does not treat an expired indication as a queue place.
Empty cells stay empty. Until a later primary source names a reserved megawatt for a named hall against those tables, the connection clock stays a method, not a census.
