Wastewater heat into a district network — not a hall loop

Is a Swedish data hall selling heat into the same pipe as treated sewage, or have you only been handed a Stockholm Exergi plant page? Stockholm Exergi’s Hammarbyverket page calls the plant the world’s largest heat-pump facility that extracts heat from treated wastewater. The same page says the plant has seven heat pumps plus two bio-oil boilers and two electric boilers used only when it is really cold in winter, that together they produce up to 1,200 gigawatt-hours of heat a year — enough to heat more than 100,000 apartments — and that treated wastewater arrives from Henriksdals reningsverk. Exergi’s environmental report for 2025, published in April 2026, writes the seven heat pumps as one of about 25 megawatts, four of about 30 megawatts each and two of about 40 megawatts each, two of them rebuilt so they can also run as chillers in summer at about 40 megawatts, and says treated wastewater from Henriksdal is led in rock tunnels to a basin under the heat pumps. Those are plant sentences about a municipal wastewater stream. They are not a hall flange. The low-grade-and-latent page already owns Exergi’s named Open District Heating products, including normal 68 °C Avropsvärme, and the ~30 °C hall-loop warning. The offtake-contracts page already owns the hall-to-network paper. This page only asks whether the sewage object stays on its own row.

Reading order

Start with the heat source, not with a reuse slogan. Write whether the live paper is treated wastewater from a municipal treatment plant, seawater, a hall condenser loop, or a latent or phase-change claim. Hammarbyverket’s public page and its 2025 environmental report name treated wastewater from Henriksdal. That is a sewage object. It is not a hall object. The district-heating page already owns the Swedish DH path. This page keeps the sewage stream named because a 1,200 gigawatt-hour plant sentence pasted onto a hall flange invents a third source.

Then name the plant cells that the URLs actually fill. The public page fills seven heat pumps, two bio-oil boilers, two electric boilers for extreme cold, up to 1,200 gigawatt-hours a year and more than 100,000 apartments. The 2025 environmental report fills the seven unit sizes, the summer chiller rebuild at about 40 megawatts, the rock tunnels and the basin under the pumps, and it writes Hammarbyverket as a base-load plant for southern Stockholm’s district-heating network and for district cooling to Södermalm, Liljeholmen, Hammarby Sjöstad and the Globen area. Those cells describe one plant. They do not describe a named data hall.

Only then open the hall-heat papers as contrast, not as a sum. The low-grade-and-latent page already owns Exergi’s flange products and the ~30 °C hall-loop warning. The offtake-contracts page already owns the statute-and-product paper between a hall and a network. The Government Offices’ July 2025 Energy Efficiency Directive memo, already in this register, is a reporting and reuse-policy paper. It is not a Henriksdal cubic metre and not a hall megawatt.

What a wastewater-heat cell actually is

A wastewater-heat cell is a dated description of heat taken from a municipal sewage stream after treatment, not a colour on a hall slide. Hammarbyverket’s public page writes that treated wastewater comes from Henriksdal to the heat pumps, and that the warm district-heating water then goes into southern Stockholm’s network. The 2025 environmental report writes the same path as rock tunnels into a basin under the pumps, then into the pumps, then — as spillkyla, residual cold — into the district-cooling plant through pressure exchangers. Those are two products from one sewage stream: heat into the southern heating network, and cold into a named cooling network. They are not a hall condenser.

The plant also has peak and reserve objects. The public page writes two bio-oil boilers and two electric boilers used only when it is really cold. The 2025 report writes the oil boilers as 100 megawatts each, fired mainly on bio-oils, with a 100-metre chimney. A peak boiler is not a heat-pump megawatt and not a hall offtake. Do not add the boiler cells to the heat-pump cells and call the sum a wastewater product.

A hall heat product remains a different machine. Exergi’s Open District Heating pages, already in this register, name flange products that a hall can offer. The low-grade page already warns that a ~30 °C loop is not automatically Avropsvärme at 68 °C. A sewage stream leaving Henriksdal is a municipal treatment-plant object. Those two papers do not become one product because both can be called heat.

Reporting duties stay on their own pages. Lag (2025:570) and the energy-performance reporting page own the 500 kilowatt installed-IT filing. The July 2025 Energy Efficiency Directive memo owns a policy conversation about waste heat. Neither paper classifies Hammarbyverket as a data hall, and neither paper classifies a Swedish hall as a sewage plant.

What named primary sources show

Stockholm Exergi’s Hammarbyverket page shows the world’s-largest wastewater heat-pump sentence, the seven pumps, the two bio-oil and two electric boilers, the up-to-1,200 gigawatt-hour year and the more-than-100,000-apartment illustration, and it names Henriksdal as the wastewater source. The 2025 environmental report shows the seven unit sizes, the summer chiller rebuild, the rock tunnels, the basin, the southern-network base-load role and the named district-cooling districts.

Exergi’s Open District Heating pages and product sheet, already in this register, remain the hall-flange contrast. The July 2025 Energy Efficiency Directive memo remains a policy paper. GleSYS’s 1 October 2020 Falkenberg notice remains a hall-heat start, not a sewage plant.

The table is a permission table. A filled cell is a claim the named URL can carry. An empty cell means this page will not invent the missing hall wastewater megawatt.

Do not add Hammarbyverket’s 1,200 gigawatt-hours to a hall flange and call the sum a Swedish data-hall wastewater product. Those remain different objects from different letterheads.

Common misreads

The first misread is to treat Hammarbyverket’s 1,200 gigawatt-hour year as a hall offtake. The year is a plant production sentence. The second is to treat the seven heat-pump sizes as a Swedish data-hall census. The third is to add the 100 megawatt oil-boiler cells to the heat-pump cells and call the sum wastewater heat.

The fourth is to treat a ~30 °C hall loop as the same product as treated sewage entering Hammarbyverket. The fifth is to treat the more-than-100,000-apartment illustration as a hall customer count. The sixth is to treat the July 2025 Energy Efficiency Directive memo as a Henriksdal connection agreement.

What to ask next

If a brief prints one Swedish wastewater-heat megawatt, ask which named URL uses that megawatt for a Henriksdal stream, a Hammarby heat pump, a peak boiler or a hall flange. If the URL only shows an apartment illustration or a company heat slogan, the brief has already left the source.

Then open the district-heating page, the offtake page and the low-grade page. Those pages already own the DH path, the hall-to-network paper and the flange products. This page only asks whether the sewage bars stay on their own rows.

  2. Which Hammarby cell is in play — heat pump, peak boiler or cooling rebuild?
  3. Has 1,200 GWh been pasted onto a hall flange?

What this does and does not prove

This page proves that Stockholm Exergi already publishes a treated-wastewater heat-pump plant at Hammarbyverket, with seven named pump sizes, a 1,200 gigawatt-hour year and Henriksdal as the source, and that those sentences are not a hall flange.

It does not prove how many megawatts a named Swedish hall can sell as wastewater heat. It does not classify a hall loop as sewage. It does not treat an apartment illustration as a customer contract.

Empty cells stay empty. Until a later primary source names a Swedish hall’s wastewater-heat product with a dated flange and a boundary, the sewage plant stays a method contrast, not a hall census.
