Heat-recovery readiness is not delivered heat: Horndal, Hamina and the Swedish file

Google’s 2 June 2026 Horndal notices say the new hall is being built ready for off-site heat recovery. The same press page says the Hamina, Finland, project is already supplying about 2,000 households. Those are different evidence states. A Swedish file that copies the Finnish supply sentence onto Horndal invents a delivery that the source did not claim.

Heat reuse fails in the same way capacity totals fail: two sentences with different dates and scopes are added together. Google’s Horndal pages say the Swedish facility uses air cooling and is built ready for off-site recovery so that excess heat can support local homes and businesses in the future. The verb is readiness. The geography is Horndal. The delivery is not stated.

The 2 June press notice then adds a Finnish observation. Google says it has pioneered heat recovery since 2013, first on site, and that its first off-site data-center heat-recovery project in Hamina is currently supplying about 2,000 households. That sentence can support a claim about Hamina on the date of the notice. It cannot support a claim that Horndal is already heating Swedish homes.

Stockholm already has a separate invitation architecture. Stockholm Data Parks names the City of Stockholm, Stockholm Exergi, Ellevio and Stokab. atNorth’s SWE02 notice says heat reuse with Stockholm Exergi is part of the Akalla design. Conapto’s CoreWeave notice repeats heat recovery into the district-heating network. Those are described or intended arrangements. GleSYS’s 1 October 2020 start of delivery to Falkenberg Energi remains the dated west-coast contrast that actually names a delivery start.

Cooling technology is part of the same file and must stay attached to the source wording. Google says Horndal will be air-cooled and will limit water use. That is a design claim. It is not a measured water volume and not a PUE. It also does not tell the reader the temperature of the rejected heat or the identity of a Swedish heat buyer. Those variables decide whether readiness can become a contract.

Microsoft’s 26 March 2026 Denmark East notice is useful international context and a caution. Microsoft says the Høje-Taastrup site will be its first operational at-scale waste-heat recovery in Denmark, with the ability to warm around 6,000 local homes, and that Køge’s mayor expects surplus heat to the local network over time. Those are Danish claims. They do not update a Swedish project row and they do not prove that every Nordic campus now has a signed heat offtake.

The next Swedish request is therefore concrete. Who is the heat buyer? What temperature and seasonal profile are specified? Is there a connection agreement to a district-heating network? Has delivery started, and for which period is a volume measured? If those documents are missing, the honest label is designed or described — not delivered.

This article does not invent a Horndal megawatt-hour total and does not convert household counts into Swedish capacity. It exists so that a heat sentence can be stored with its geography, its verb and its date. Readiness in Dalarna, supply in Finland, an invitation in Stockholm and a 2020 delivery start in Falkenberg can sit in one market conversation. They cannot sit in one cell.

Why it matters

Investors already treat heat reuse as a site advantage. The advantage is only decision-useful when the source says designed, contracted or delivered — and names the country.

What remains unknown

No cited source states a Horndal heat buyer, a Swedish delivery start or a measured Horndal heat volume. Hamina’s household figure is not a Swedish observation.
