Svenska kraftnät’s 2026–2035 plan: Stockholm cannot grant further increases on the present transmission grid

On 15 December 2025 Svenska kraftnät published its network development plan for 2026–2035. In the Region Stockholm chapter the authority says electricity use is already so high that further increases cannot be granted with the present transmission grid. New server halls are named as one cause among others. That is a regional planning sentence. It is not a refused connection for a named hall.

Svenska kraftnät’s 15 December 2025 press notice is the dated publication source used here. It says the authority is releasing the network development plan 2026–2035. The plan PDF’s Region Stockholm section places the region in bidding area SE3. Electricity demand in the Stockholm region is increasing rapidly. The main causes listed are a growing population, locally reduced electricity production overall, new electricity-dependent infrastructure such as vehicle charging, and new server halls.

The load-bearing constraint sentence must keep its wording. Already today, electricity use is so high that further increases cannot be granted with the present transmission grid. That is a statement about the present Stockholm transmission system in a ten-year plan. It is not a decision letter to Conapto, Bahnhof, atNorth SWE02 or any other named campus. It is also not a spare-megawatt band for SE1 or SE4.

The remedy named in the same section is a second reinforcement package. More than fifteen years earlier, Svenska kraftnät and the regional network owners produced Stockholms Ström. Demand forecasts have since risen faster than expected. The authority has therefore produced Storstockholm Väst to handle the sharply increased demand and to secure long-term operational security. When both packages have been carried out, the plan says the transmission grid’s capability will be sufficient according to current forecasts. Regional networks must still be adapted. Sufficiency after both packages is a forecast clause, not a 2026 connection offer.

This article does not read a megawatt off that chart. The later national and bidding-area tables from 2026 remain separate artefacts. New server halls in the cause list are not a published Stockholm data-center megawatt.

Until then, ‘cannot be granted on the present grid’ stays a regional plan sentence — not a cancelled hall and not a northern surplus.

Why it matters

A plan sentence that Stockholm cannot grant further increases is easy to file as a metro ban, or as proof that a northern plot is next. The December plan is usable only if server halls stay one cause among several — and if no named hall inherits the refusal.

What remains unknown

The plan chapter does not name a refused data-center applicant, does not publish a Stockholm data-center megawatt, and does not date completion of Storstockholm Väst as a connection offer.
