Svenska kraftnät’s 10 February NordBalt note is existing-HVDC support, not new reserved SE4 hall power

Svenska kraftnät’s 10 February 2025 update said the existing NordBalt cable between Nybro and Klaipėda supported the Baltics through island operation and that connection to Continental Europe was complete at 13:05 on Sunday. Support from an existing cable is not a new SE4 reservation.

Svenska kraftnät’s 10 February 2025 NordBalt update is the dated interconnect source used here. It says the Baltic states’ connection to the Continental European synchronous area over the weekend went according to plan. After Kaliningrad and then Russia and Belarus were disconnected, the Baltics ran as their own synchronous area. Connection was written as complete at 13:05 on Sunday. An existing-cable support note is not a new reserved offtake.

The cable sentence must stay a cable sentence. The important Swedish contribution is written as the NordBalt submarine cable between Nybro in Sweden and Klaipėda in Lithuania. During the island period NordBalt is written as standing ready, together in part with EstLink 1 between Finland and Estonia and LitPol between Lithuania and Poland. Those links are written as direct-current links. NordBalt is written as having active frequency regulation that can help hold frequency in the Baltic synchronous area. Those are existing-HVDC facts. They are not a new SE4 hall megawatt.

The test sentence must stay a test sentence. After disconnection, frequency tests were written as taking place on Saturday, with no incidents noted through Saturday and the night to Sunday and with a stable frequency. Voltage tests early on Sunday morning are written as approved before Continental Europe gave the go-ahead. A completed Sunday connection is not a live SE4 hall.

Until then, 13:05 on Sunday stays an existing-cable support sentence — not reserved SE4 hall capacity.

Why it matters

A NordBalt headline from the Baltic desynchronisation weekend is easy to file as new SE4 hall headroom. The February update is usable only if the existing cable stays an existing cable — not a new reservation.

What remains unknown

The update does not print a new NordBalt rating, create a Swedish SE4 reservation or name a reserved hall offtake beside Nybro.
