Ellevio’s 4 February 2025 SDC paper is a 10 MW / 10 MWh battery, not the June heat contract

On 4 February 2025 Ellevio said Energy Solutions had financed, designed and now operates a 10 MW / 10 MWh battery for Scandinavian Energy Centers in Eskilstuna under Power-as-a-Service. The sister company sits next to Scandinavian Data Centers’ first hall. A battery in operation is not 10 MW of district heat and not a liquid-cooled IT rating.

Ellevio’s Energy Solutions case dated 4 February 2025 is the dated campus-battery source used here. It says Ellevio contributed financing, design and operation of a 10 MW / 10 MWh BESS through Power-as-a-Service, so Scandinavian Energy Centers did not have to make a large investment itself. The page, marked updated on 4 February 2025, says the battery facility is in operation. In operation is Ellevio’s word for the battery. It is not a hall commissioning.

Backup stays a can-sentence. Besides storing energy and supporting the grid, the battery can also come to function as reserve power for the data centre, to reduce dependence on fossil alternatives such as diesel generators. Can is the issuer’s hedge. The notice does not publish a diesel-replacement rating.

Scandinavian Data Centers’ same-day ecosystem notice is the hall companion, not a second battery. The first site in Eskilstuna sits in a former Second World War aircraft-engine cavern. A smaller data centre has been operated there for fourteen years by one of the largest Nordic IT companies. The planned expansion will include both traditional air-cooled and liquid-cooled data halls for higher IT loads. Air-cooled and liquid-cooled is a design sentence. This article does not invent a liquid megawatt. Heat reuse on that page is still a design sentence: the district-heating network’s capacity to absorb residual heat sets how the halls are designed. The signed 10 MW, 25-year heat contract stays on the 4 June 2026 row.

Named Eskilstuna rows stay separate. The December 2025 ENACO award, with its phase-one IT ceiling of up to 6 MW, is a later builder paper. Atea Sweden is named as a company that will use the data centre. Mayor Jimmy Jansson is quoted on circularity. Those quotes are not a megawatt.

DataCenterSweden records 4 February 2025 as an Ellevio Power-as-a-Service battery of 10 MW / 10 MWh next to the first SDC site. No project identifier is attached. The next update would need a later primary source that names a measured backup event or a commissioned liquid hall. Until then, 10 MW / 10 MWh stays a battery — not the June heat ceiling.

Why it matters

Two Eskilstuna 10 MW headlines — battery and later heat — are easy to add. The February case is usable only if 10 MW / 10 MWh stays the battery.

What remains unknown

The case does not publish a diesel-replacement rating, a liquid-cooled IT megawatt or a 2025 heat volume.
