Saft’s 4 October 2023 notice is a delivered Swedish-hall BESS; the site is unnamed

On 4 October 2023 Saft said it had delivered a battery energy storage system to replace diesel backup at Microsoft’s sustainable data center in Sweden. The system entered operation in June 2023 as four groups of 4 MWh, for up to 80 minutes of backup. The notice does not name Gävle, Sandviken or Staffanstorp. An unnamed Swedish BESS is not a grid-scale battery park.

Saft’s 4 October 2023 notice is the dated BESS-at-hall source used here. It says Saft delivered a battery energy storage system to replace diesel backup generators at Microsoft’s sustainable data center in Sweden. The system entered operation in June 2023. Entered operation is a past-tense delivery claim. The Swedish municipality is not named. This register will not assign the battery to Gävle, Sandviken or Staffanstorp.

The energy sentence must keep Saft’s grouping. The BESS provides four groups of 4 MWh each for up to 80 minutes of backup energy. The scope included eight Intensium Max 20 High Energy containers organised in four groups, each container capable of a peak power rating of 3 MW. This article does not multiply those figures into a new campus rating the notice did not print as a single megawatt.

Function language stays backup and grid support. Until then, diesel generators had been essential for continuity in a grid outage. The BESS is described as displacing the diesel generator, supporting grid stability and providing black-start capability. Displacement is not a published count of removed engines. Grid stability and black start are Saft’s words. They are not a Svenska kraftnät reservation.

A 2021 collaboration sentence sits beside the delivery. The BESS results from a collaboration formed between TotalEnergies and Microsoft in March 2021, on a path to diesel-free data centers by 2030. A 2030 goal is not a 2023 certificate that every Swedish Microsoft hall is diesel-free. Named Swedish Microsoft rows in this register remain three municipalities on the 2021 region paper. This BESS notice does not restate their megawatts.

The next update would need a later primary source that names the municipality or a later rating. Until then, four times 4 MWh stays the grouped energy sentence.

Why it matters

A Microsoft Sweden battery headline is easy to pin on Gävle, Sandviken or Staffanstorp. The October notice is usable only if the municipality stays unnamed and 4 × 4 MWh stays grouped backup energy — not a grid-park rating.

What remains unknown

The notice does not name the Swedish municipality, the number of displaced diesel sets, or a Svenska kraftnät agreement.
