Northern hyperscale cluster reading guide: Luleå, Boden, Meta, Hydro66

Norrbotten contains two publicly documented data-center hooks in SE1: Meta’s Luleå campus, operational from 2013 on the cited careers page, and a Hydro66 Svenska company record in Boden. Current megawatts for both files are unknown in the sources used here. A 2011 announced energy need is not current operating capacity. The two municipalities are not one campus. A hydropower sentence is not a connection agreement.

Northern Sweden attracts cluster language. The language is understandable: hydropower, outdoor air, a named US operator campus, a second municipality with an operator company, and bidding area SE1. The error is to convert that language into a megawatt total. This reading guide keeps Luleå and Boden as two files, keeps unknown megawatts unknown, and keeps SE1 as a wholesale-price area. It does not invent a third northern hall and does not import directory capacities.

Read Meta Luleå first. The careers page used here describes the campus as Meta’s first data center outside the United States and as operational from 2013. It describes outdoor-air cooling and local hydropower. It does not state current IT or facility megawatts. It does not restate a building count on the extract used for this register. Existence and a design story are documented. A live capacity series is not.

Read the 27 October 2011 Associated Press item second, and date it. The wording stored in this register is that the site “will need 120 MW of energy.” The metric type — IT versus facility — is not defined. The sentence is an announcement from the year the project was reported as coming, not a 2026 operating reading. DataCenterSweden stores it as a reported announcement and does not use it as current capacity. Readers who need a current number must find a later primary source. This file has not.

Read Boden third as a different evidence state. Hydro66 Svenska AB is registered as a data-center operator with a Boden locality and is listed in public directories as part of the Northern Data group. A current official facility page with stage and megawatts was not located in the check that produced this register. The record is therefore a documented operator presence, not a fully specified campus. Market brands toward customers may differ from the legal name. Older Hydro66 marketing must be dated and must not be added to Meta’s campus.

Read SE1 fourth. Energimarknadsinspektionen publishes the area as SE1 Luleå. Luleå and Boden sit in that area. Gävle and Sandviken sit in SE2, not in this cluster. Sollefteå’s atNorth SWE04 development sits in SE2 and in Västernorrland; pulling a 50-hectare plot into a Norrbotten hyperscale total would invent a county merger. Stockholm and Falun sit in SE3. Staffanstorp and Falkenberg sit in SE4. Cluster language that ignores those borders is marketing, not geography.

Mechanisms do not soften because the climate is cold. Outdoor-air cooling is a design opportunity in a northern climate. It is not a permit. Hydropower as described by an operator is a supply story. It is not a published connection agreement with a defined import, voltage and energization date. The network owner for a further Luleå building or for a Boden plot is a separate counterpart. Svenska kraftnät’s indicative transmission map, if consulted, does not show the underlying network and does not replace the formal process. Boverket’s detaljplan guidance still governs municipal land use.

Microsoft’s 2021 Sweden region is sometimes pasted into a “northern cluster” slide because Gävle and Sandviken sit in SE2. They are not Luleå and they are not Boden. Their facility megawatts are also undisclosed in the cited Microsoft materials. Staffanstorp, the third named Microsoft municipality, sits in SE4. A three-municipality cloud region is not a Norrbotten campus. AWS Europe (Stockholm) is a Sweden-region name without a published municipality on the cited launch pages and does not belong on a Luleå map pin.

What the named sources show, and only that, is as follows. Treating SE1 as a reserved import. Treating hydropower as a grid agreement. Treating outdoor air as an environmental permit. Filling gaps from unofficial directories. Treating Northern Data group language as a published Swedish campus specification. Treating “cluster” as a legal planning object.

What to ask next is deliberately boring. Which Meta buildings are in operation, and on what date did the operator last say so? Which Luleå detailed plans govern further expansion? Which network owner would answer a further import request in Luleå, and which would answer in Boden? What is the current public name of the Boden campus, and is there now a first-party page with stage and capacity? If a megawatt is still missing, leave it missing. Point to the source gap. Do not average two unknowns.

Ownership and screening questions belong in other files. A Boden company record does not decide an Inspektionen för strategiska produkter case. A Meta campus does not decide one either. This guide does not label nationalities and does not infer a screening outcome from a registry row. The foreign-investment statute is a different paper from a hydropower sentence.

This article proves that the northern set in this register is two municipalities, two evidence states, one bidding area and no current first-party megawatt series. It does not prove residual SE1 capacity. It does not prove a combined campus. It does not prove that unpublished northern projects exist. Unknown megawatts stay unknown.

Why it matters

A northern cluster slide is often the first artefact in a site memo. If that slide adds unpublished megawatts or merges Luleå with Boden, every later connection question is already wrong. The public file is thinner than the slide, and that thinness is the finding.
