North Pole Fiber is a Kiruna–Norway inland path; Polar Connect’s landing is described as Norway

NORDUnet’s 9 January 2024 kick-off says North Pole Fiber closes a missing link between the EU TEN-T hub in Kiruna and the Norwegian border, securing resilience for future landfall of the Polar Connect submarine cable in Norway. The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat says the project runs from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2026. An inland Swedish fibre path is not an Arctic landing station and not a Norrbotten hall.

NORDUnet’s 9 January 2024 kick-off is the dated programme source used here. It says SUNET, the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat and NORDUnet met in Stockholm to start North Pole Fiber, co-funded under the CEF-2 Digital programme. Highlights include closing the missing link between the EU TEN-T hub in Kiruna and the Norway border, securing resilience for future landfall of the Polar Connect submarine cable in Norway, and works inside Sweden to create a fibre path from Kiruna to the Norwegian border as an alternative crossing. Future landfall is not a built landing.

The secretariat’s project page repeats the inland job. North Pole Fiber is preparatory work for Polar Connect. It is important in establishing resilient fibre routes in northern Sweden, from Kiruna to the Norwegian border, to be extended to the Arctic Ocean coast where Polar Connect will land. The project runs 36 months, from 1 January 2024 until 31 December 2026. Polar Connect is described as a Nordic initiative developed by NORDUnet, the Swedish Research Council and the secretariat.

NORDUnet’s Polar Connect page keeps the same split and adds one exploration sentence. Within North Pole Fiber the partners will establish redundant connectivity from the European Union to a future Polar Connect landing site in northern Norway. The same page says the project will also explore an additional and/or alternative route from Asia and Northern America directly to the EU, with a potential landing site in Southern Sweden or Denmark. Explore and potential are planning words. They are not a named Swedish beach, a permit or a hall. The Swedish work already described is a fibre path inside Sweden. It is not a statement that Kiruna is the submarine landing. This article will not invent a Norwegian or a Scanian beach the sources left unnamed.

The Commission’s Northern EU Gateways study page lists Polar Connect at 10,000 km and says a Call 2 North Pole Fibre implementation provides a fibre path between Kiruna and the Norwegian border. That is the same inland object. C-Lion2 and Far North Fiber stay on their own rows. A Norrbotten data-center brochure that treats Polar Connect as a live Luleå landing is mixing a research-network path with a hall pin.

DataCenterSweden records January 2024–December 2026 as a Swedish inland-fibre preparatory project for a later Arctic cable. No project identifier in this register is attached. The next update would need a later primary source that names a landing municipality, a laid segment or a different schedule. Until then, Kiruna is a TEN-T hub on an inland path, not a cable-landing station.

Why it matters

A Kiruna fibre headline is easy to file as an Arctic landing campus in Norrbotten. The 2024 papers are usable only if the Swedish work stays an inland path, the named landing stays a future Norwegian landfall, and Southern Sweden or Denmark stays an exploration option — not a beach pin.

What remains unknown

The cited pages do not name a completed Swedish landing station, a Southern Sweden or Denmark municipality for the exploration route, a laid Kiruna–border segment or a Polar Connect construction start.
