Netnod’s 18 June 2026 paper is a Scandinavian DWDM ring, not a hall megawatt

On 18 June 2026 Netnod said it is establishing its own wavelength network on DWDM technology, with Smartoptics as partner, in a ring over Stockholm, Malmö, Gothenburg and Oslo. DWDM splits existing fibre into independent wavelengths. A ring is not Polar Connect and not a data-hall import.

Netnod’s Cision notice dated 18 June 2026 is the dated fibre-interconnect source used here. It says Netnod is strengthening Nordic digital infrastructure by establishing its own wavelength network based on DWDM technology. After an evaluation, the Scandinavian company Smartoptics was selected as the strategic partner. The investment is said to give Netnod full control over the infrastructure and a higher level of robustness, resilience and redundancy. Control is not a named campus circuit.

The routes must stay a ring, not a hall list. The expansion covers Stockholm–Malmö, Malmö–Gothenburg, Gothenburg–Oslo and Oslo–Stockholm. By operating the optical infrastructure independently, Netnod says it will be able to offer its time services with a higher degree of precision and improved redundancy. Time-service precision is a Netnod product sentence. It is not a latency figure for a named Swedish hall.

DWDM stays a fibre sentence. The notice defines Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing as a wavelength technology that optimises capacity in existing fibre cables by dividing the light into different wavelengths, each acting as an independent channel. Existing fibre is the issuer’s object. This article does not invent a new cable landing or a megawatt.

Named Nordic fibre rows stay on their own papers. Arelion’s Scandinavian fibre notice, GlobalConnect’s Sweden–Finland cable and Nordic backbone papers, and Polar Connect / North Pole Fiber planning sentences are different issuers and routes. A Netnod DWDM ring does not become those files.

DataCenterSweden records 18 June 2026 as a Netnod Scandinavian DWDM-ring notice. No project identifier is attached. The next update would need a later primary source that names a campus interconnect, a landing or a commissioned wavelength. Until then, Stockholm–Malmö–Gothenburg–Oslo stays a ring — not reserved hall capacity.

Why it matters

A Scandinavian fibre headline next to Stockholm and Oslo is easy to file as campus interconnect. The June notice is usable only if DWDM stays extra wavelengths in existing fibre — not a hall megawatt.

What remains unknown

The notice does not publish a campus circuit, a landing station, a latency figure or a data-hall megawatt.
