GothNet’s surplus-heat note is an urban-farming reuse, not a hyperscale heat contract

Göteborg Energi’s May 2026 page on AI and data-centre electricity demand says surplus heat from the company’s GothNet data centre is used in an urban-farming project with the City of Gothenburg and Svalan. A 24°C residual-heat example is not a new campus offtake.

Göteborg Energi’s article-bank page, published in May 2026, is the dated heat-reuse source used here. The page discusses how AI and data centres raise electricity demand and how surplus heat can be used. In that setting Göteborg Energi says it uses surplus heat from its own GothNet data centre in an urban-farming project. A utility-own-hall example is not a named hyperscale contract.

The farming sentence must stay a farming sentence. Göteborg Energi, the City of Gothenburg and the growing company Svalan run a project where surplus heat from GothNet is used for urban growing. Business developer Magnus Hartmann says residual-heat temperatures are about 24 degrees, which fits greenhouses well. That is a temperature-and-use sentence. It is not a megawatt and not a city-wide district-heat deal.

The commentary sentence must stay a commentary sentence. The same page says new AI halls can need as much electricity as smaller cities and that European areas already exist where capacity is not enough when new data centres want to connect. Those are general planning comments. They do not name a Gothenburg campus, a reserved offtake or a Svenska kraftnät reservation. This article does not turn that commentary into a named hall.

The next update would need a later primary source that names a new heat contract, a reserved offtake or a commissioned third-party hall in Gothenburg. Until then, 24 degrees stays a residual-heat example — not reserved Gothenburg hall capacity.

Why it matters

A Gothenburg page that prints AI, data centres and surplus heat is easy to file as a new campus deal. The May note is usable only if GothNet’s farming reuse stays a farming reuse.

What remains unknown

The page does not name a third-party campus, a reserved offtake megawatt or a new district-heat contract beyond the GothNet farming example.
