GlobalConnect’s 3 July 2025 Sweden–Finland cable is ~150 km of sea fibre plus ~365 km on land

On 3 July 2025 GlobalConnect said it had started implementing a new subsea cable between Sweden and Finland via Åland, about 150 km at sea, plus about 365 km of terrestrial upgrades from Helsinki to Turku and from Stockholm to Gävle. Completion is set for the end of 2026. A scheduled Baltic cable is not C-Lion2 and not a hall.

GlobalConnect’s 3 July 2025 notice is the dated submarine-and-terrestrial source used here. It says the company has started implementing a new subsea cable between Sweden and Finland via Åland. The investment is about EUR 14 million. Completion is set for the end of 2026. Set for is a schedule word. It is not a ready-for-service certificate in this file.

The split between sea and land must stay visible. In addition to about 150 km of new sea cable, GlobalConnect will upgrade about 365 km of existing land fibre between Helsinki and Turku, Åland, and Stockholm and Gävle. Land upgrades in existing ducts are dated to the second half of 2025. Beach drilling in Sweden, Åland and Turku, cable laying and two new inline-amplifier stations are dated 2026. Go-live is scheduled for the end of 2026. Scheduled is not live.

The capacity sentence is a comparison with GlobalConnect’s existing Sweden–Finland cable, not a Nordic census. The new sea cable is described as a 400 percent capacity increase compared with the existing GlobalConnect cable between Sweden and Finland. Four hundred percent is that comparison. The notice’s claim that the cable will support all Nordic data needs is marketing language on the same page. It is not a measured hall throughput.

Named Baltic fibre rows stay on their own papers. C-Lion1’s 2024 Swedish-EEZ fault, C-Lion2 / Northern EU Gateways, Polar Connect, Far North Fiber and Arelion’s Helsinki–Warsaw ring are different issuers. The later 23 January 2026 backbone notice is a wider land programme. It does not rewrite this July sea-cable schedule into a completed landing.

DataCenterSweden records 3 July 2025 as a Sweden–Finland submarine-and-terrestrial build notice. No project identifier is attached. The next update would need a later primary source that names a go-live, a landing municipality or a different length. Until then, end-2026 stays a completion target.

Why it matters

A Sweden–Finland cable with a Gävle land tail is easy to file as a new northern campus lateral. The July notice is usable only if 150 km and 365 km stay sea and land, and if end-2026 stays scheduled.

What remains unknown

The notice does not name a Swedish beach municipality, a completed 2026 landing or a hall that will take the new pairs.
