GlobalConnect’s Polar Connect CEF top-up is Arctic survey money, not a Kiruna landing

On 29 December 2025 GlobalConnect said Polar Connect had been granted €5 million from the EU Connecting Europe Facility. The system is planned to enter service in 2030. Extra survey funding is not the inland North Pole Fiber path and not a named Swedish beach.

GlobalConnect’s 29 December 2025 Mynewsdesk notice is the dated funding source used here. It says Polar Connect, an Arctic submarine-cable system intended to connect Europe, North America and East Asia, has been granted €5 million from the Connecting Europe Facility. The system is planned to enter service in 2030 and to run across the Arctic Ocean at depths down to 4,000 metres. A grant and a planned in-service year are not a laid cable.

The mapping sentences must stay mapping sentences. The notice says large parts of the central Arctic Ocean are still insufficiently mapped. In summer 2025 the Swedish icebreaker Oden began mapping the seabed. In November 2025 about 45 percent of the route had been mapped. A second expedition is planned for 2026. Those are survey-progress sentences. They are not a landing municipality.

The icebreaker and PC2 rows stay later rows. Building Polar Connect will ultimately require a new heavy icebreaker able to work in central Arctic ice up to four metres thick. Funding for such a ship is under discussion in the Riksdag; no decision had been taken when the notice was published. Polar Connect Step 2 is to prepare material for marine survey, manufacture and laying, including studies of routing, repair in extreme conditions and identification of optimal landing points in Europe, North America and Asia. Recipients named for PC2 are the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, NORDUnet, GlobalConnect, CSC and the Swedish Research Council. Optimal landing points are not named beaches.

Named neighbouring papers stay on their own files. NORDUnet’s January 2024 North Pole Fiber kick-off, the Polar Research Secretariat’s Kiruna–Norway inland path and Cinia’s Far North Fiber route-planning page are different instruments. This CEF top-up does not become those files and does not attach a project identifier.

The next update would need a later primary source that names a landing municipality, a laid segment, an icebreaker decision or a changed in-service year. Until then, Polar Connect stays a survey-and-funding row — not a Kiruna cable-landing station.

Why it matters

An Arctic-cable funding headline is easy to file as a live Kiruna landing. The December notice is usable only if the Swedish object stays seabed mapping and an undecided icebreaker — not a beach pin.

What remains unknown

The fetched notice does not name a European, North American or Asian landing municipality, a laid Polar Connect segment or a Riksdag icebreaker decision.
