GlobalConnect’s 23 January 2026 backbone upgrade is a 1,250 km terrestrial programme, not a hall

On 23 January 2026 GlobalConnect said it had launched a project to triple internet capacity across about 1,250 km between 2025 and 2027, covering Stockholm, Gävle, Gothenburg, Oslo and Helsinki. The estimated investment is about EUR 40 million. A fibre-strand upgrade is not a data-center megawatt and not Polar Connect.

GlobalConnect’s 23 January 2026 notice is the dated terrestrial-fibre source used here. It says the company has launched a major project to triple internet capacity across 1,250 km in two years. New high-capacity fibre cables will be added to existing infrastructure between Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The upgrade started in late 2025 and continues through 2027. An estimated total investment is about EUR 40 million. Estimated is not a closed account.

The capacity sentence must keep its fibre wording. The notice lists about 1,250 km of reinforced fibre, a capacity increase of +300 percent with 288 fibre strands, 18 municipalities in Sweden starting November 2025, six in Norway starting November 2025 and 13 in Finland starting in the first quarter of 2026. Two hundred and eighty-eight strands are not a hall import. Named cities are route geography. They are not Gävle Microsoft, Gothenburg Bahnhof or a Helsinki campus pin.

A neighbouring sea sentence must stay on its own line. In addition to land upgrades, GlobalConnect has announced multiple subsea projects connecting Sweden with Finland, Åland, Estonia and Gotland, given as 240 km. Those routes sit beside the July 2025 Sweden–Finland cable paper already stored as a separate note. This January notice is the land-backbone programme. It does not turn the July sea cable into a completed 2026 landing.

Named Nordic fibre rows stay separate. C-Lion1, C-Lion2, North Pole Fiber, Polar Connect, Far North Fiber and Arelion’s Helsinki–Warsaw terrestrial ring are different issuers. Bifrost, launched in 2023, is GlobalConnect’s longer programme of more than 3,000 km. A brochure that pastes +300 percent onto a Swedish hall as live IT capacity is rewriting a fibre-strand sentence.

DataCenterSweden records 23 January 2026 as a Nordic terrestrial backbone-upgrade notice. No project identifier is attached. The next update would need a later primary source that names a completed segment or a different kilometre figure. Until then, 1,250 km and 2027 stay a programme envelope.

Why it matters

A triple-capacity fibre headline through Gävle and Stockholm is easy to file as a new Swedish campus. The January notice is usable only if 288 strands stay fibre and 2027 stays a completion window — not reserved hall power.

What remains unknown

The notice does not name a completed 2026 land segment, a landing station for a hall in this register, or a data-center megawatt.
