GlobalConnect’s Kattegat cable is a construction start, not a live 2027 interconnect

On 19 February 2026 GlobalConnect said it had begun construction of a new about 92 km subsea cable between Lerkil south of Gothenburg and Sæby in northern Denmark, with 288 fibre strands and go-live planned by the end of 2027. A started marine route is not a live path.

GlobalConnect’s 19 February 2026 Mynewsdesk notice is the dated subsea source used here. It says GlobalConnect has begun construction of a new subsea cable across the Kattegat connecting Sweden and Denmark. The route is presented as part of a broader effort to build a resilient Nordic fibre network and to secure Nordic connectivity toward continental Europe. A construction-start sentence is not a go-live certificate.

The route-and-money sentence must stay a route-and-money sentence. The sea cable between Lerkil and Sæby is about 92 kilometres and is given as 288 fibre strands. The investment is €11.9 million, of which €5.9 million is supported by the EU Connecting Europe Facility (CEF2). The notice says the route will connect to land highways in Denmark and Sweden before continuing toward Finland and continental Europe, as part of a 2,600 km corridor from Helsinki to Hamburg. Those are design and funding rows. They are not a commissioned path.

The timetable must stay a timetable. 2025 is described as the permit and survey year. 2026 covers marine surveys, land-side construction, repeater-site works and the start of cable laying. 2027 covers continued laying and go-live by the end of that year. Two new inline-amplifier stations are to be built in 2026. A 2027 go-live target is not a live interconnect on this paper’s date.

Named neighbouring papers stay on their own files. The notice calls this the third major GlobalConnect subsea initiative, alongside new highway routes between Sweden and Finland and Gotland and Estonia. Polar Connect, the Nordic backbone-triple note and other Baltic repair papers are different programmes and different dates. Ageing existing Sweden–Denmark cables are a redundancy argument. They are not this route in service.

DataCenterSweden records 19 February 2026 as a GlobalConnect Kattegat construction-start notice. No project identifier is attached. The next update would need a later primary source that names a completed landing, a live path or a changed kilometre or funding figure. Until then, 92 kilometres stays a construction measure — not a live Swedish–Danish interconnect.

Why it matters

A new Sweden–Denmark cable with a 2027 go-live line is easy to file as live Nordic interconnect. The February notice is usable only if construction start stays construction start.

What remains unknown

The notice does not print a completed landing, a live service date or a named datacentre customer on the Lerkil–Sæby route.
