Far North Fiber is still a route-planning Arctic system; Finland and Ireland landings are a later Call 2 line

Cinia says Far North Fiber will be the first cable system through the Arctic, about 15,500 km, connecting Asia to Europe via North America and the Northwest Passage, and that route planning is in progress. The Commission’s 3 December 2024 page lists 17,000 km and says a later Call 2 implementation includes landing stations in Finland and Ireland. Planned length and a later landing-station sentence are not a built Nordic campus.

Cinia’s Northern EU Gateways page is the operator planning source used here. It says Far North Fiber will be the first cable system through the Arctic connecting Asia to Europe via North America and the Northwest Passage. When completed, the approximately 15,500-kilometre optical-fibre system will run in geopolitically stable and safe areas. The project will conduct the route planning of the FNF submarine cable. Cable-route planning is in progress. When completed and in progress are planning verbs.

The Commission page of 3 December 2024 must keep its own length. It lists Far North Fiber at 17,000 km. Fifteen thousand five hundred and 17,000 are different planned figures on different issuers. This register records the split. It does not average them into a new kilometre total. The study dates remain 1 January 2023 to 31 August 2024. A closed study window is not a laid Arctic cable.

Landing-station language sits on a later line. The Commission says implementations partially based on the study include a Call 2 Far North Fiber project providing marine ground surveys for the North Atlantic segment and building cable landing stations in Finland and Ireland. Building, on a programme page about a later call, is not a completion certificate and not a Swedish landing. Ireland is not a Nordic hall. Finland is not Horndal.

Polar Connect and North Pole Fiber remain a different Arctic family: an inland Kiruna path toward a future Norwegian landfall. C-Lion2 remains a Baltic planning file. A brochure that merges FNF, Polar Connect and C-Lion2 into one Swedish landing campus is inventing a single object the study listed as separate activities.

The next update would need a later primary source that names a completed landing, a marine-survey result or a construction start. Until then, 15,500 km and 17,000 km stay planned lengths on two papers.

Why it matters

An Arctic cable with landing-station words is easy to file as a new Nordic campus. The study papers are usable only if 15,500 km and 17,000 km stay planned — and if Finland and Ireland stay a later Call 2 line, not a Swedish beach.

What remains unknown

The cited pages do not name a completed landing station, a Swedish landfall or a construction start for Far North Fiber.
