Vattenfall’s Digital Realty 24/7 match is hourly accounting, not a new Stockholm megawatt

On 4 February 2025 Vattenfall said it would match renewable production hour by hour to Digital Realty’s six existing Stockholm data centres, using smart meters. Hourly matching is not new hall power and not a heat contract.

Vattenfall’s 4 February 2025 Swedish notice is the dated matching source used here. It says Digital Realty operates more than 300 data centres worldwide, of which six are in Stockholm, and that a cooperation now begins to measure renewable-electricity use per hour at the Swedish sites. Digital Realty has taken electricity from Vattenfall since 2015. The six Stockholm halls will now have consumption matched to renewable production hour by hour with smart meters. Hourly matching is not a new hall and not a reserved offtake.

The product sentence must stay a product sentence. Digital Realty has chosen Vattenfall’s 24/7 matching so that renewable consumption is paired with production on an hourly basis. The English twin of the same day says energy used by the six Stockholm data centres will be measured by smart meters to facilitate hourly matching of renewable energy in near real time. The customer can also choose specific energy sources for that hourly match. Those are accounting sentences. They are not a megawatt addition.

The commentary sentence must stay a commentary sentence. Vattenfall’s Andreas Regnell, head of strategic development, calls the match a way to give customers specific data with unique precision for sustainability work. Digital Realty’s Pernille Hoffmann, managing director Nordics, says every kilowatt-hour consumed can be traced and linked to renewable sources. The English page also quotes Aaron Binkley, vice president of sustainability. Those are operator comments. They are not a heat contract and not a grid reservation.
